Rachel Teesdale

Programme Manager for Accelerate Education division

Hi

Bio

Rachel originally trained as an Occupational Therapist specialising in community-based rehabilitation, before moving to the Cook Islands where she worked in the hospitality industry. This experience sparked a love of cooking, so for a period of time after returning to New Zealand she managed a catering business.

Rachel has worked for Skills Update for the past three and a half years, initially as an employment coach assisting sole parents into employment, and more recently as a programme manager.

Racheal’s varied work history has been particularly useful in her current role, as many of the qualifications she oversees are for industries where she has had experience.

Where are you from?

Hamilton, New Zealand.

What are the things you like most about your home country?

The freedom, our access to education and opportunities, our beautiful scenery - especially the beaches!

What are your three most favourite books?

I enjoy historical novels such as Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, and also like anything by Jodi Picoult, and books that celebrate women’s achievements despite adversity, like ‘The Help’ and ‘Hidden Figures’.

What sports teams do you support?

I follow netball, although am not a diehard fan of any particular team.

How do you spend your free time?

I love to cook, and often cater for friend’s parties. I also like to scour second hand shops and markets for treasures, and particularly like art deco and coloured glass pieces. I love a bargain!

What is your favourite music?

I tend to listen to R&B. I was a teenager in the 90's so music from this era holds fond memories.

What famous person do you most admire and why?

Oprah Winfrey is an inspiring lady. Her humanitarian efforts and lifelong commitment to helping others and standing up for the underdog are all very admirable. Her success as a business woman and ability to relate to everyday people, despite her fame is also a great accomplishment.

How would your friends describe you?

They would describe me as loyal, dependable, and a great mum.
